5 Essentials for a Beach Honeymoon

For the past 12 months you’ve been thinking through every minute detail of your wedding, from the colour of your flowers to how you politely tell Aunty Janet that her rendition of “Hungry Eyes” is not appropriate for cocktail hour. Your long list of to-dos and sleepless nights has left you little time to think through what you need for your romantic beach honeymoon.  So as you scramble through your closet searching for your cutest teeny bikinis, be sure not to forget these five essential items:

1. Sunscreen – Yes, it’s an obvious item to pack but often forgotten. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), South Africa has the 2nd highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Be sure to use a sunscreen with SPF of between 20 and 50 & 30 for fair to very fair skin. So while you’re at it, go ahead and pack two bottles.

2. Insect repellent – As the threat of the Zika virus escalates, bringing insect repellent is important now more than ever. It is vital that you apply the insect repellent during the day as well. And make sure it contains DEET, a common active ingredient in insect repellents.

3. First-aid friction block stick – Your new pair of Steve Madden sandals have rubbed a blister but nothing is going to stop you from showing off your new sandals while on honeymoon. Glide on the friction blocker and keep on strutting.

4. Sunglasses – And we’re not talking the kind you buy at a petrol station. Studies have shown that it is more harmful to your eyes to wear a cheap pair of sunglasses than wearing no sunglasses at all. So do yourself a favour and splurge for a pair that has 100% protection against damaging UVA and UVB rays. May we suggest Maui Jim’s Mavericks in their new blue mirror lens? Check out

5. Insulated Water Bottles – No one likes a warm beverage on a hot day. Thankfully, K-Way has come out with an insulated water bottle that can keep beverages and water ice cold in the summer heat. They are light and not bulky so you can take them anywhere with you. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
