Top day spas in the Eastern Cape

Top day spas in the Eastern Cape reviews_74_6826.jpg

Day spas have increased in popularity worldwide in the last few years. There are few hotels, resorts, cruise ships or game reserves that do not have their own day spa.

The Eastern Cape, in the past few years, has seen a steady increase in these luxurious establishments and, as always, competition is great for the consumer as it manages cost, improves quality and drives innovation.

In this article, we only focus on day spas, which are all about relaxation, stress relief, luxury and comfort. They usually provide massages, skin care in the form of facials, manicures and pedicures and hydrotherapy and have facilities that include a sauna, pool, steam room and massage rooms.

Beauty salons, with their focus on cosmetic beauty and hair, and health spas with their focus on fitness and dietary routines, are not included.

A good day spa is not just about having a relaxing vibe and a skilled therapist, although these are essential. A really good spa, as those on our list are, makes you feel special from the minute you walk through the door.

The service, the sound, the quiet, the temperature, the colours, the aromas and the use of space must all come together in a manner that makes you breathe deeply and relax.  Knowingly or not, a great day spa incorporates most of what the Chinese would call Feng Shui.

Our team of judges included four women and one metrosexual male and between us, we have come up with our own, very subjective, assessment of which day spas are really fantastic. Your views may differ from ours, but here, with our reasoning, are the spas we most like to visit.

  1. Aqua Spa & Skin @ 95 on Main

The best spa in the Eastern Cape is not found in the metropolis of Port Elizabeth, but in the farming town of Humansdorp. The contrast between the very busy and noisy Main Street, in which the Spa is found, and the quiet, secluded serenity of this spa are, perhaps, one of the factors that make a visit to this spa truly wonderful.

Nicolette Gerber, the Branch Manager at Aqua Spa & Skin @ 95 on Main says; “Our spa offers Five Star facilities such as a Rasul, a flotation pool, sauna and ozone pod to match our world class body therapies and medical skin treatments.”

Amber says “This is quite simply my favourite spa in the region. It is absolutely amazing. In terms of facilities, treatments, variety and whole packages, this spa takes the cake with a cherry on top.”

Skin care products include Lemelle, Dermologica, Sh’Zen, Spalicious and Heliocare amongst others.

Aqua Spa has branches in St Francis Bay and in Jeffreys Bay, both of which are fantastic, but it is the Humansdorp branch that really stands out.

  1. Africology Spa

There are two characteristics that make this spa a very close second. Firstly, it is large and spacious and beautifully designed and secondly, it is the fresh, clean and invigorating smell of the Africology products that not only permeate the spa itself, but also the long passage from the entrance of the hotel.

Amber Blumson, Design & PR at Africology Spa, situated inside of the Boardwalk Hotel in Beach Road Summerstrand, says; “We are the only eco-friendly spa in Port Elizabeth and our Africology products are kind to the earth and your biology.”

“Every time I enter the Boardwalk Hotel, I catch a draught of the Africology fragrance. It invokes not only good memories, but relaxes me on the spot,” says Graeme.

Amber adds, “The mani room is bliss and the water facilities are spectacular.”

Africology is named for their range of luxury, natural and eco-friendly skincare products that are fragranced with pure essential oils.

Facilities include a sauna, steam room, hydro-bath and an adjacent indoor pool.
